Selvapiana Chianti Rufina, 2008
As long term Pastaworks customers know, Selvapiana is the estate that launched us into Italian wines twenty-seven years ago. A wondrous bottle of 1977 Selvapiana Chianti Rufina Riserva opened our minds and palates to the vinous treasures of Italy (the riserva classification is now used solely for the single vineyard Bucerchiale).
For you newbies, please know that Selvapiana represents the good side of the wine world, producing quality wines, consistently, that convey a sense of place as well as a compelling story. Francesco, Federico and Silvia Giuntini, along with consulting enologist Franco Bernabei, craft wines of distinction from the smallest of all Chianti producing zones, just east of Florence. The 2008 Chianti Rufina is 95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo. Bright and forward, yet always balanced, Selvapiana is a perfect match with roast fowl or grilled meats.
