about evoe
Evoe is the name of Pastaworks eating-in space at our Hawthorne store in Southeast Portland. Evoe draws its name from the invocation to Bacchus in Virgil’s Aeneid, “Evoe! O Bacchus, thus began the song…”, which also gave its name to Pastaworks owner Peter de Garmo’s only winemaking experience in California in the late 1960’s.
Evoe is an "enlightened snack bar" featuring small dishes, salads, sandwiches and soups, with prices in the $4.50-$12 range. Offerings change frequently and feature the produce, meats and products found on Pastaworks retail shelves. Some breads will be baked on site, others will come from Grand Central,Pearl and Fressen bakeries. Wines and beers are available by the glass. Additionally, Evoe customers can choose from Pastaworks impressive retail selection of wines and artisan beers (with a very modest corkage fee for wines).
Peter and Kevin de Garmo (part of the fourth generation winemaking crew at the time) want Evoe to capture the spirit of conviviality that characterized their "winemaking" way back when. Kevin Gibson, formerly of Portland’s Castagna restaurant, brings his culinary skills to the table, literally, as he prepares your food in front of you. The gregarious John Hart, frequent contributor to the eat.shop guides assists Kevin on weekends in the "front" of the house, and Kevin de Garmo often pours the wines and beers and talks shop. Evoe is meant to be a place where you can sit and eat lunch, or have a glass of wine or beer and a nibble in the late afternoon as you prepare yourself for the rest of the evening.
